This is a soundfile of Grandma and Joe (and Dan, Mary, and Aaron in spots), just before Thanksgiving, 2004 –
Grandma waxes large on Real Estate, Grandpa Thill, marriage, my Grandpa Wolff, the Saint Clair Shores development, the DTCU (Detroit Teacher’s Credit Union), the crash of 1929, today’s society, Whitter, flooded basements, saving (all kinds of!) stuff, on being 100, and various other topics – she’s exceptionally detailed and concise in this recording! Grandma tells all!
Mr Howell, the founder of the DTCU, gave Grandma a loan to keep the property – but she had to pledge and sign over her entire paycheck for years to keep it.
She said “No!” to Grandpa when he asked her to marry him.
“35 more years” I told her – remembering the french woman who lived to be 135 – Dan says she gave up riding her bike at 100!
Joe
Joe, it was prescient of you to record this conversation! So great to hear her talk. It’s beyond priceless. And you’re a gifted interviewer! I’ve often wondered about that time period when she was having all those extractions. -Mom
